Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured on it.

Other ways to deal with debt

A secured loan is one option among several, and not always the right one. We'll tell you when it isn't.

  • An unsecured personal loan No charge on your home. Usually a higher rate than a secured loan, but for smaller amounts the lack of fees often makes it cheaper overall.
  • A 0% balance transfer card If you can clear the balance within the promotional period, this is usually the cheapest way to deal with card debt.
  • A debt management plan An informal agreement to repay what you owe at a rate you can afford, arranged through a free advice charity.
  • An individual voluntary arrangement A formal, legally binding agreement to repay part of what you owe over a fixed period.
  • A debt relief order or bankruptcy Formal insolvency routes for when debts can't realistically be repaid. Free advice is essential before considering either.
  • Breathing Space A government scheme giving up to 60 days' protection from interest, fees and enforcement while you get advice.
  • Talking to your creditors Many lenders will agree reduced payments or a payment holiday if you contact them early.
